Dirty Little Secret

Between here and facebook I've become a bit known for cooking.  Which is nice, I suppose.  But I have this sinking suspicion that people assume I cook every meal of the day, most days.  And that would be a flat out lie.  You see, I don't do breakfast.  Hardly ever.  Occasionally I will do what can only be classified as brunch.  Or we'll have breakfast for dinner.  But I don't do breakfast, never have really.  I was the glass of juice or cup of coffee sort of girl.

Which makes me a hypocrite because I lecture G on the importance of breakfast.  He isn't really into it either.  But lately we've been having toast with jam (that he makes and brings up to bed).  And today we had blueberry scones.  They were a Harry and David mix that I added blueberries to, I made most of them for his co-workers for today (he forgot them) but set some aside for us.  Other than that my morning breakfast routine consists of propping myself up in bed, eyes half shut and reminding G that we have yogurt/toast/fruit/etc. and to eat something.  I usually head back to bed after he leaves so find it useless to eat something myself.

I know that breakfast is important, a great start to the day.  But when I'm half asleep it just seems like so much effort to have to find something and actually eat it.  I'm much more the "put my eye mask back on, sleep til 10 and then eat yogurt" sort of woman.  Am I alone in this?

  1. You are not alone! I am so the same way. I know breakfast is important (and when the school year is in session I am up at 5am - OUCH - to teach my zero hour class on time) and necessary to start your day, but my body just protests. It's hard enough for me to get out of bed, if I have to get up 10 minutes earlier for some breakfast? Not going to happen. :) Within the first hour or two I am up I usually have a granola bar or yogurt. That's usually it for breakfast for me!

  2. I didn't eat breakfast ever, and often when we went out for breakfast I would get a non-breakfast dish. Then I got pregnant and realized I needed to keep my blood sugar even. So I started eating oatmeal because it was quick. I jazz it up, add some leftover brie or gorgonzola, maybe some herbs, hot sauce, brown sugar and blueberries, make it something more unique than just plain Quick Oats. And I have seen such a difference in my outlook, my sleep, my eating habits.

Now that I am doing weight watchers, I usually do the oatmeal sans fluff, just a bit of spray butter and hot sauce (I like breakfast to be savory, don't like syrup, etc.). However a new breakfast fave has come up - eggbeaters with an English muffin or bagel thin and Laughing Cow cheese spread like cream cheese. I had it this morning and it takes less than 2 minutes and tastes so luxe. And now I make time in the AM, even 10 minutes to have my meal sitting, cloth napkin, maybe read the mail or a book, or sit on the deck and watch the birds and just breathe and start the day off calm and nourished. :)

  3. On weekdays I eat a little toast with preserves or yogurt, granola and fruit because I am at work all morning and know I will get hungry if I don't. But on weekends, I relish in lounging around and not eating until I'm hungry. sometimes I am, sometimes I am not.

  4. I don't usually go back to bed (although I'd like to!) but I'm totally with you on the breakfast thing. I'm usually content with a cup of Earl Grey tea and an early lunch. Otherwise, yogurt and fruit a couple of hours after I get up is okay. Today I had my favorite, though. I had a piece of baguette that I saved from my lunch at Panera Bread yesterday. I toasted it, spread with butter and homemade blackberry jam. Yum. :)

  5. I enjoy "breakfast" about an hour or 2 after I wake up. But I prefer something more like what we had at the Hotel Savoy. That was scrumptious!
