Traveling

I have always loved history.  My daddy is a history nut as well, so I come by it honestly.  If he has an afternoon to kill he will 90% of the time be watching the history channel, and although it drives my mom batty, I am usually right there with him (when I'm home).  G is the same way, so it's probably a good thing we don't have cable or we'd never get anything done!  We both love old houses, certain time periods in history, and can get lost in historical fiction (G read a book about cathedral building last year and went through a period of being in love with cathedrals!).

Right now I am absorbed in The Time Traveler's Wife.  Absolutely freaking absorbed.  I had to wrench myself away to type this post up quickly.  I have no idea how it has taken me so long to read, but when we saw the book at Target G made me get it since I'm refusing to watch the movie without reading the book and he wants to see the movie this weekend.

Has anyone else read this book?  Love it?  Find it okay?  So far it just makes me incredibly sad, and I'm only 100 or so pages in.  It's a love story, and I myself know how complicated they can be, so I feel empathetic towards the characters and the constant confusion.  So far it's brilliantly written, making it easy to keep track of what has happened (or what is going to happen).

Oh, and if you're reading any other fantastic books, please let me know.  I have a biography of Marie Antoinette waiting, as well as the new Elizabeth Kostova novel (she wrote The Historian).  And we saw a book at Target that interested me greatly called Three Cups of Tea.  But I am feeling very into my reading lately, and would love to know of anything good.  Also, look for a book review coming up on the book that consumed me last week whenever I had a free moment.

  1. I am not usually a big contemporary fiction reader( memoir and lit are my favorite non-work related reads) but I remember being totally engrossed in The Time Traveler's Wife. The book was so much better than the movie. Why is that always the case?;-)

I am presently reading James Masterson's "The Search for Self". It is a psychology text but I find it fascinating.

    Happy reading!!

  3. No, I haven't read the book but saw the movie on the plane and the sound control was broken on the way to the States. I just recently became so interest in history more because my husband is a history buff.

The book that I finished reading is Mireille Guiliano's new book: Women, Work and the Art of Savoir Faire. Pretty good if you're in the business world. But I read for her entertaining style, food and her style tips!

I've been fascinated in what happend during WW11 and before that. Going the W D.C. went to the Holocaust Museum made me read even interest. Even though I'm not a fiction type but picked up Charlotte Gray...war/love story during the Nazi's invasion. Saw the movie but thought got to get the book. Also, got Sarah's Key because it takes place in old and modern Paris. Although, not read any of them as our book club is thinking of a Jane Austen book.
Will write more on which books I've read. I love reading!!!!!

  4. I attempted the Time Traveler's Wife this past summer and it just wasn't my cup of tea. Right now I'm reading Lisey's Story by Stephen King... Not a fan of his work but WOWZA this one is good!! Is definitely not his typical writing and is worth a read!

Keep posting about any good books you read because I'm always looking for a recommendation. One that I think you'd love is, Mrs. Mike by Benedict and Nancy Freedman... Such a beautiful but tragic story, I think you'd adore it.
