I have never had brussels sprouts in my life. For good reason, my maman recently pointed out, they weren't allowed anywhere near my parents house. My Daddy hates them, and I blame this on boiled brussels sprouts (which is I imagine what he was forced to eat sometime during his childhood). So I had never had them....until tonight.
I picked up some tiny fresh brussels sprouts from the store because G loves cabbage and the like. I was armed with a recipe by DesertCandy, and a brave heart (and stomach). I had to improvise with the recipe, because shallots we did not have, and we're snowed in. Instead I mixed olive oil and some bacon grease (fresh, we fried bacon earlier for a quiche I made this afternoon), added some garlic powder and onion powder (what can I say, shockingly I am out of both onions and garlic), and followed the rest of the recipe.
Amazing! These turned out so good that G and I were fighting over who got more (he won, he's a growing boy after all!). I was so surprised I called my mom up and described it as so-good-I'm-going-to-trick-Daddy-into-trying-them good. She at first said yuck, but seemed intrigued when I said they kinda reminded me of cauliflower. So please, if you think you're not a fan of brussels sprouts go out and get some (they're in season) and try this recipe. Add a little sauteed bacon if you wish. Next up on our list is breaded brussels sprouts, I'll let you know how that goes!
Mmmmm, I LOVE brussels sprouts!! I usually cut them in half, toss in olive oil and a little salt, then roast in a HOT oven on a metal cookie sheet until tender (shake or turn halfway through). WOW, they are soooo good, especially the crispy parts. And sooooo easy!! Glad you've discovered/enjoyed this earthy pleasure!! It's a keeper!
ReplyDeleteThis looks really good! I actually have no ever had brussel sprouts either. Hmm... we may have to try these.
ReplyDeleteI like them roasted like this.
ReplyDeleteRoasted brussel sprouts are great, we've been doing them in my family for a long time. Right now I'm really loving roasted cabbage with balsamic vinegar...yum!!
ReplyDeleteI would look past brussel sprouts. Also, I dont' think I ever had them. So thanks for the idea as I love anything with bacon!
