Graduation

My oldest baby brother is graduating in a week.  Wow.  I remember when he was a chubby little toddler who couldn't be away from our maman for more than a few minutes.  No, I'm not kidding.  And he hasn't exactly changed.  He has maman time nearly every day, usually in person, but at least by phone.  He's a maman's boy, and we love him for it.

And he's one of my best friends whom I adore.  He's (fairly) responsible and has a good heart.  He has no problem telling people when they need to be more kind to others, except when it comes to himself.  He's loyal to a fault.  He's also a spoiled pain in the rear, but I'm figuring that's his age.  : )

But for his graduation I am at a standstill for what to give him.  I was planning on giving him a suit to prepare him for life ahead, but he has one.  (and my husband doesn't, so perhaps I need to rethink priorities?)  I thought of giving him a nice watch, but he breaks those easily.  I really don't want to just give him money because as his sister I think that's ridiculous.  No offense to those who choose to give money, and I do understand monetary gifts from people who don't know the graduate well (though I'm perplexed by the giving of money to someone you don't know well, but that's another post another day), but I think as his sister I need to give him something for him.

So that's why I think G and I have come up with a plan.  To give him nothing.  For now.  Knowing as I do how that first year of college goes I think a gift later could be a better idea.  As he survives each semester.  I'd elaborate more, but since my maman reads this I want to keep it a secret for now.

But what is your opinion about high school graduation gifts?  Best gift you were given?

  1. My parents bought me a really nice backpack to use for college (used it all four years and beyond). I thought that was a nice, smart gift.

My aunt bought me a laundry bag, put detergent (etc), a roll of quarters, and other things like that into it. Useful stuff and nice to not have to buy yourself!

  2. I would have to say, remembering back to our college days, a camera would have been the best thing to have from the get go. We took soooo many pictures!
