Which Way?

I've had some time to think about this blog.  Why I started writing it.  Where exactly I wanted to go with it originally, and where I want to go with it now.  I've felt pulled in so many directions, that this time to just ponder has been good.  I stopped reading so many blogs because reading so many at the time seemed to only confuse me.  Should I be doing "this"?  Should I be talking more about "that"?  Endless questions that only led me further and further away from me.

So, last night I looked up Une Vie Chic.  I've always meant it as translating to The Chic Life, but I wanted to see what the exact definition of chic is.  Turns out the simplest is this:  stylish, smart.  Which made me so happy because suddenly I knew where I needed to really go from here.

I've spent a lot of time talking about my life, the daily happenings.  And really, unless you're a close friend or family member I doubt it's all that interesting usually.  And even more important, it doesn't really interest me.  I was writing to write, because I felt I had to.  And that, my dear readers, is not chic.  Not at all.  Those are getting cut out unless it's something so fantastic I have to talk about it.  I have a diary, this need not be it.

I am not trendy.  If I happen to come across a trend that I like and it works for me I assume it's a fluke and that I got lucky.  So there won't be posts about current fashion (I don't even have close to large enough of a wardrobe to be a fashion blogger).

I am a Christian, but this is never going to be a Christian blog, where I talk about Jesus and my walk with Him.  Faith is such a personal journey, and I don't feel like talking about it online really works for me.  I will talk about if we had an amazing Midnight Mass or something, but only if it pertains to chic things in life.  Beautiful music and words are always chic.

What I will be doing is trying to be the blog I originally sought out when I first discovered there were these amazing things called blogs in the first place.  A place that talks about how to achieve a chic life.  Now obviously my idea of chic and your idea of chic may differ, but it's my blog so I'll talk about what I like.  I like luxurious things, whether big or small.  I truly believe that there are some items that are inexpensive that are amazing, but other things you really should spend much more.  I have come to truly hate polyester in my clothing and refuse to buy any more.  This meant that the other night while shopping a top that looked amazing on me got hung back on the rack.  I'll search for a silk shirt I like instead.

I will also talk about food, because let's face it, I love a chic French life, and to obtain that you need to learn to cook.  French restaurants are amazing, but most French adults know how to cook and entertain at home.  If you say you can't cook I'll call b.s.  You might not know how to yet but anyone can cook.  And I will be aiming to help you.  I will however never be a food blogger (sorry Julie!).

I have enjoyed blogging immensely.  I've enjoyed sharing my life.  But right now I am in a season where living it is so very important.  I want to make this blog something enjoyable to read, a place where those who love the European lifestyle can come to hear about new products, get a new recipe, or just learn something new.  I am planning on using a template to figure out topics, things I want to discuss.  And I do hope to start more discussions, get some of the lurkers interested enough to interact.  So please continue to read, and if you want to comment or even e-mail me, I love hearing from people!

And here's my new haircut, second day hair, a little flat but still loving it.

  1. Bravo. Blogging has a way of getting away from you. Even when I started my new blog with the intention of only posting about what truly interests me, sometimes I find myself posting just to fill space, even if it does not interest me all that much. It's nice to be reminded of this and refocus on why we are all doing this in the first place. You've clearly defined your vision and it sound great to me!

And you also bring up a good point....I may start a personal journal on actual paper that's just for me. Too many times I let it all hang out and some things are better left between me and my own pen and paper.

  2. I came to your blog because I too want to live a chic life and soon I became hooked on you and your story. It is almost always that way---I come for the theme and I stay for the person.
As you know I started at writing about francophile and now write about my life and about psychology. I never imagined I would make that change but I am so glad that I did.
I look forward to whatever you want to write about!
    p.s. The hair looks great.

  3. Your hair looks great - love that you are defining your blog... and don't feel pressure just to fill space on it. Sometimes I will let mine go for a few days or quelle horreur, even 5 days but that's just cause that is all I have to say right now. I want to enjoy it and never be a slave to it.
Can't wait to read what you do next. And, I think second day hair is THE BEST - super chic.
    Thanks for your comment.

  4. I love that you are crystallising your thoughts and your blog into exactly what you want it to be. You want it to be something you would love to read even if it wasn't yours (I'm not sure if that reads how I meant it - one of my original blog goals was to 'write what I wanted to read'). I'm excited for you and really looking forward to your future posts on living a chic life. I think stylish and smart are such great words to link with chic also.

To chic! - clinks champagne flutes -

PS. Have you already, or would you consider doing, a blog post on the making of your own candles? Photos would be an advantage, but a description is great too! Merci!

  5. Whoa, love your hair cut!!! You look absolutely chic there:) It's great that you've priotized your blog. I also, like those words: stylish and smart. Been there done that, to writing to fill the post, wishing more comments as to checking almost every second if 'anybody' comments. It gets pretty tiring. Really, I write what I want that makes me want to read back on it, like Fiona said. And to what I enjoy. Although, I'm more fond of reading other peoples blog, like yours:)

  6. I think it's so important to know what you want from things like blogs, and I am glad you do and that you are planning to make this site just what you want it to be! I'll be here reading (though I am quite behind on blogs at the moment from my daughter being sick - I am catching up!)
