When G returned home from Iraq, we found a bedroom set we really liked. But the cost was a bit higher than we had planned for, so we put it off. In fact, put it off for over 5 months. What can I say? I'm indecisive and have a tendency to want to make sure something is a smart decision before leaping. (Kind of makes you wonder how I decided to ask G out and then agree to marry him just a few weeks after he came back from tech school?)
But today, the local furniture store was having a sale, and while I had been thinking of getting the set online, this deal made it work out, and I gladly will give a local place my business. So in we went, and decided to bite the bullet and buy the bed and dresser. It's by Kincaid, an American company that makes solid wood (no veneers) furniture. I'm looking forward to curling up with my little family to snuggle on weekend mornings.
While there we checked out their clearance section and found a sofa we thought would look great in our living room. It's a beautiful dark blue-grey sofa by Better Homes and Gardens for Craftmaster. It's good looking, but also sturdy, and the fabric is going to make it easy to make sure Nora doesn't spill something on it and ruin it. It turned out to be under $600, even after tax, so a great cost for a sofa for us at this point. It will be delivered the same time as the bedroom set (we're waiting on the bed). Usually they wouldn't hold it for us, but because we were purchasing other things the manager made an exception.
We also shot down to Virginia yesterday to look at the Savvy Rest latex mattresses. Figured out which combination of firmness will work for us, and we're ordering it soon. They're running a special this month with up to $500 free of items to go with, so we'll end up with a washable wool mattress pad (helps keep it clean, great for parents whose child is in a drool phase) and 2 shredded rubber pillows in our choice of size (they are AMAZING---super comfortable!).
All that is left really is to get rid of our current living room sofas, figure out new carpet for our bedroom and put it all together. We already have our antique/vintage nightstands, we've had the bedding for ages, and my beeswax candles just arrived on Friday (more on that later). I'm excited and can't wait to take pics to show everyone!

Cocktail Time!
After the last post I really was thinking, I need to get rid of this piece. It's so big, it's style is one I love, but it doesn't match the stuff in my home completely. Now, I don't have a bunch of modern things (not really my taste....plus I don't believe there is anything modern, it's all recycled old designs anyway), but it's definitely French-style, and strangely most of my home is not. Shocking, I know.
Anyway, after a living room picnic tonight I got the urge to rearrange and see if it would fit on the wall next to my staircase. It did! So I set about seeing what we could do with it, and realized the height was perfect for a bar area. So I set a silver tray on one end with our decanters, liquor, and cocktail picks, and our wine rack with old bottles (to see how it looked) on the other end. Add a print, an initial I painted, and eventually (evident in one pic, not another) the French house number I won from My French Corner.
Voila! Perfection, I couldn't be happier. Now we have a better height bar to pour drinks, and the vintage glasses can go in the cabinet on one side. The smaller shaker and the glass ice bucket fit perfectly on the other. It's just calling for a cocktail party. I suppose my Theresa and I will have to test it out next month!

What On Earth Was I Thinking?
We picked up yet another piece of furniture yesterday. G and I both saw it, fell in love, and when we found out that it was $60 we were sold. Turns out that if we were to have it carefully refinished by a trained antiques professional that it would be worth around $1000-1500. Um, great, now I'm afraid to touch it. It's a piece from the 1920's, a tall sideboard, and it's plan currently is to reside in our bedroom. Eventually when we move to a home that is older in style then it will go in the parlor/sitting room as a bar. G would love to use is as that now.....but it's taller than our sofa and as long as it to boot!
Notice the little puppies, their toy. They like to have cameos in everything. I love the beautiful veneers on these drawers that matches the veneer shape on each side door.

Beginning
At 1 a.m. Saturday morning I decided it was time to begin on the desk, so G and I hauled it down 3 flights of stairs and I got to work. I sanded the top down completely because it has some marks. I washed the dust away and let it dry and primed it the next day. It's now got one coat of paint on it, and is waiting for a second (and possible third). The drawers have yet to be touched, but they will be worked on once the main part has been finished.
I cannot wait to show this baby off when she's finished!

Green Desires
G and I both love this chair, the corrigan from Anthropologie. However, it's 2 grand. And really low profile and we're both a bit tall (though I will deny being tall, I'm the shortest in my family!). So I'm thinking....
I want this:
I want this:
Wondering if we could re-upholster one of my grandmama's chairs in emerald green leather and change the legs to more turned ones? Something to think on for sure. (because G? He salivates over this chair. A man's chair? Like something in a library? Green? Yeah, it's bad.)

Painting Wooden Furniture
I know that a lot of people have strong feelings about not painting wooden furniture. I am not one of those people. I am very much looking forward to painting the dresser, and the bar cart, and anything else I see fit to paint (although I am procrastinating out of a strong fear of screwing them up). However I also love deep colors and grains of wood. I play the violin, and my favorite part of really nice violins is the back, the grains and the various ways they form patterns. On that note that is why I will not be painting this:
This is the bottom half of the china cabinet we picked up last month. I was taking picks for an upcoming post (well, several days of exciting posts, actually) on UneVieChic, and happened to catch this as I was flipping through the photos I took. It's the first great pic I got of the wood grain. Each door is 4 pieces seamlessly put together to form this beautiful outward pattern. So I'm not painting it, but hopefully if I get my act together you will get to see what does happen with it next week!

No Name
Don't you just love how it was put together?
We're considering putting a really pretty fabric here on the side, something to make it pop. I actually have a really cool idea, but you'll have to wait to see!
Our little nook already looks a lot more cozy, don't you think?

Meet Bingley
We picked up this guy from craigslist, and I think he makes a nice addition to our home. I will be keeping an eye out for fabric to recover him with. For now he gives G a place to rest as he watches me search for something in our closet. I thought it was about time we added another male to the home....
But I caught him snuggling with our new afghan! I think he'll fit in just fine. A man with a sensitive side is always nice!

Meet Felicity
Garret and I agonized over this purchase for about 12 hours. The problem was, we wanted it, knew what we would do with it, and it was pretty inexpensive (I love thrift stores!) but seriously.....we drive a Fusion! And it didn't come apart. But we decided we would "make it work" and used string and a plastic drop cloth to cover it (because of course today it decided to rain!), and away we went! Please meet Felicity:
Isn't she beautiful? I cannot wait to show you what we're doing with her!

Changing It Up
Over the next 6 months or so G and I really want to switch up our bedroom style. Before it was light and airy, very hotel like. And while we like the hotel-ish look we want to move into more of a darker, relaxing space feel. So the light and airy bedroom items will be moved into a guest bedroom (which we're excited to have one for friends and family who visit!) and we will be stepping it up.
The best part of the the new house? The entire 3rd floor is our suite!!! You walk up the stairs into a hardwood area where there will be a sitting area and the desk, although I am still figuring out how to work it. Here is the area outside our bedroom....it's quite a bit bigger than it looks in pics, especially by the bathroom. This pic was taken from right at the stairs.
I'm hoping to find something like this for the sitting area:
I love this chair! Something about this type of line on upholstered furniture makes me happy. Two of these and a little table would make the perfect sitting area.
We also have our own bathroom with a shower (no bathtub, but there is a whirpool one on the second level, easy to walk down to when I want to relax). Right outside our bedroom is the closet where the washer and dryer will go, so I don't have any excuse not to do the laundry!
As for our bedroom, we are taking it dark, at least that is the plan for now. We will be saving up for nice pieces of furniture, but also thrifting and finding creative ways to get the look we want. Our bedroom is not huge, but it does have high ceilings, so we think we can get away with painting it navy blue. These are the inspiration for it (I apologize, but these have been saved for awhile and I don't remember where from!):
But to that we're adding glamourous touches, a little bit of femininity. Perhaps a couple benches like this one from Ballard Designs at the end of the bed?
We really like these white lamps (the table ones) from zGallerie. They're quite a bit larger than you would think which will work nicely with the height of the bed, and I personally love the shape. I think because it's round, it helps contrast with the dark structured lines of the bed.
Our bedroom has a ceiling fan in it with controls on the light switch (it's too high up for us to reach it without a ladder). The room has recessed lights, but the fan also has separate lights on the top and bottom that you can choose to have one or both on, and each light has a dimmer. It's nice mood lighting I must say. So technically we don't need the table lamps, but they will come in handy for reading in bed. But we also want some romantic touches, so we are going to put white pillar candles in the room as well. We're wanting a retreat, so the little touches are what will make it.
Somehow I think they will really pop against the dark blue! And with silver curtain rods and white silk organza underneath, I am hoping it will really allow light in, but still keep it from being too bright when we want to relax.

I have a thing for pink peonies, so I love how they pop against the dark blue! I have an old antique hand painted plate from my Grandmama's home that I am wanting to hang on the wall. The roses are this color of pink and a bit darker.
We sat down tonight and wrote out what we are wanting our bedroom to be. The dark walls makes it a little serious, even a little masculine. We want a canopy bed, but nothing too ornate. Something simple, like the farmhouse bed from Pottery Barn:

So far I haven't found what I am wanting with night stands, but I will keep looking! If you have any suggestions, please let me know!
But on the night stands we want a clock on one with some books, and a silver picture frame on the other with some of the white candles. We're planning on going with a silver clock for the look. Our iPod dock with the alarm will be somewhere else where we can hear it, but isn't a focal point in the room.
We like this one from Target. It's got a good weight to it, a nice older style, and for right at $20, the price is most definitely right.
For a picture of the two of us we are thinking of a silver frame. Something simple, classic, like this one from Reed and Barton:
I really love hepplewhite dressers, and would love one like this (from Eddie Ross):
With a large mirror on top to reflect light around the room. We really like this one from Pier One:
On top of a dresser like this I would like this mirrored tray from Target:
You cannot find it online anymore, but we've been able to hunt it down in stores. It's got a lot of heft to it, and for the most part is well made (a few had clearly been picked up, handled and then sat down not so gently as their sides were looser than others).
We have a couple of fun vintage glasses from my grandmama's home with frosted dots on them that we plan to use for water. Those and bottles of water will be going on the tray. One bottle of sparkling (either perrier or pellegrino) and one cleaned old bottle of the sparkling that will be filled with fresh water daily. This will be a nice touch since otherwise we would be trekking down to the kitchen whenever we wanted a drink at night, and quite frankly, I don't think that would be too fun (especially after setting alarms at night with motion detectors!).
We have a nice large window that lets in plenty of light that we want to put up curtains for. ( I love the fact that we have a tree outside our window! It's not close enough to cause problems, just close enough to be pretty!)
I am thinking some nice grey silk curtains like these from Restoration Hardware:
For now the floors are a berber carpet. Nice, but not what we are wanting in the long run. I need to remember to ask the renovators what wood they used in the house, and where to get it, so that hopefully we will eventually be able to put hardwoods into at least our bedroom.
So....what do you think? Any suggestions? Leave me comments, links, and be sure to check back soon for what I plan to do to the rest of our suite!
